2017 Lord Mayor's Business Awards

An acclaimed jeweller, a podiatrist who named her footwear line after her dog, a leading roboticist, the co-founder of a bedding and homewares chain and an insurance industry entrepreneur are contenders for the 2017 Lord Mayor’s Business Award for Business Person of the Year.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk today announced the finalists in the 2017 Lord Mayor’s Business Awards and said the line-up was stronger than ever in the awards’ 12th year.

“I never cease to be impressed by the incredible depth of talent and enterprising optimism that thrives in Brisbane,” Cr Quirk said.

“The awards celebrate excellence, success and those who think outside the square – trademarks of the Brisbane business community which makes such an invaluable contribution to our $153 billion economy.

“They also highlight why Brisbane has a growing reputation as Australia’s new world city, and align with the Brisbane 2022 New World City Action Plan to nurture companies positioned to capitalise on global markets.”

Cr Quirk said this was especially evident in the shortlist for the Business Person of Year award.

“Podiatrist and physiotherapist Caroline McCulloch founded the Frankie4 label for her range of comfortable footwear while roboticist Dr Christopher Jeffery is CEO of RER Labs, an engineering company focused on medical innovation, is a Queensland Health doctor and is also doing his PhD researching bionics at QUT,” he said.

Cr Quirk said the Lord Mayor’s Business Awards once again attracted record numbers of entries from a diverse range of industries.

“Most of our finalists are driven by improving the lives of others and making a contribution to our communities, whether via an invention, innovation, experience, medical breakthrough, social enterprise, conservation or other means,” he said.

“Through their success in Australia and internationally, they exemplify Brisbane’s entrepreneurial spirit, pro-business mentality and global outlook.”

The 2017 Lord Mayor’s Business Awards are sponsored by ANZ, Australia Pacific LNG, Australia TradeCoast, BDO, Brisbane City Council, Channel 7, Energex, Epicure, HSBC, ISPT, Optus, Port of Brisbane, Queensland Urban Utilities, Singapore Airlines, Sirromet and Staging Connections.

The 2017 winners will be announced at the Gala Dinner on Friday, 27 October, where they will join LMBA winners from past years.
