Congratulations to all this year’s winners in the Lord Mayor’s Business Awards (pictured above). At the recent gala event it was fabulous to be reminded, again, of the high calibre of business acumen and innovative and entrepreneurial spirit that exists right here among Brisbane’s business community. Special mention to Brisbane Airport Corporation for picking up the RemServ Award for Digital Strategy, Tow.com.au for taking the ANZ Made in Brisbane Award for High Growth Start-up and Heat Treatment Australia for receiving the Brisbane Times Award for Business Innovation. When I see the achievements of businesses like these, small and large, and the progress being made in local innovation, I am excited about what the future holds and determined to continue to foster Brisbane’s innovative and entrepreneurial capabilities.

This past month saw me spend some time with the Lord Mayor’s Multicultural Mentoring Scheme, facilitating a session with mentees about digital strategy. As often happens in these kinds of conversations, the discussion fell to social media and marketing strategies… again highlighting to me the importance of improving capabilities among our SMEs in these areas. To this end I am looking forward to tonight's Power-Up workshop all about Online Marketing and am committed to increasing the number of Power-Up programs we host next year focusing on social media.

With the change in federal leadership and the change in the innovation narrative, all things smart cities, innovation, entrepreneurialism and start-up ecosystems have been front and centre of my daily conversations. I’m very interested to hear what is important to YOU when it comes to innovation and enabling entrepreneurs in Brisbane… and in which areas, industries or even council services do you see the most scope for innovation? Concepts like “smart cities” and “e-government” are commonly used terms these days, but what would that truly mean for you? Please (really, please), email me your thoughts on the matter – cmatson@brisbanemarketing.com.au.
